Review of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) by Ann L — 29 Apr 2010
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED TO ME ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM.
An entertaining twist on the timeless story of young love and the beautiful girl next door. This time the setting is ancient Rome, and a conniving slave has come forward to intercede for a young man smitten with his lovely neighbor. Of course, the shifty slave has a personal agenda of his own in willfully taking on this task, i.e. acquiring his own freedom which the young man has duly promised should he succeed. But it's all in good fun and silliness abounds in this lively and delightful vaudeville cum burlesque production. Of course that's to be expected when you put together four top-flight comedians like Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, and Buster Keaton anyway. Chase scenes include some interesting stunt work.
