Review of A Free Soul (1931) by Jeff B — 19 Aug 2008
Okay film starring Lionel Barrymore in his Oscar winning role as an alcoholic lawyer. Norma Shearer plays his daughter is involved in a love triangle with Leslie Howard (her fiancee) and Clark Gable (Barrymore's client).
The acting is pretty good (though at times very over the top, particularly the end), Barrymore does the best with what he's given, but the story is just too uneven, Shearer's romance with Gable is far too rushed, and after Barrymore leaves the film for the last third or so it just gets too boring because it's all about Shearer and her boring love affair.
Whatever, at least I finally saw it.
