Review of A Fish Called Wanda (1988) by Fraser B — 09 Mar 2009
A brilliant Ealing Comedy-type film updated for the late '80s. A proper structure and story, with some brilliant running gags, that shows John Cleese can really write a more mainstream comedy but without forsaking the Python humour that made him famous.
The ensemble cast don't put a foot wrong, with some big caricatures brought down to reality by some great acting and interplay and chemistry. See if you can spot a 'blink and you'll miss it' cameo by Stephen Fry towards the very end.
Great direction by an 80-year old Charles Crichton, which showcases London but doesn't turn it into a picture postcard. An odd Hollywood-style ending for the two leads is undercut by the subversive text explaining what happens to each of the characters afterwards.
