Review of A Face in the Crowd (1957) by Chris G — 21 Sep 2007
Film hasn't aged at all, instead time caught up to it. Way ahead of its time "A Face in the Crowd" chronicles the rise and fall of insta-celebrity "Lonesome" Rhodes (Andy Griffith) who uses his celebrity to manipulate the masses, or "sheep" as he calls them, even to help advance his political friends.
Not a commentary on how fame can corrupt a person (Rhodes is a horrible person from beginning to end) but on the power of celebrity and media over the masses. Gripping and frightening, it also has Andy Griffith's best performance.
Anybody who only knows him as Andy Taylor or Matlock will be in for a horrible shock. A tour de force.
