Review of A Dog's Breakfast (2007) by Dave B — 06 Feb 2010

I liked it! I'd call it a quirky comedy with a dark(or maybe mocha) sense of humor. Kind of got a "British Comedy" feel from it and David Hewlett and others in the special features section reference Arsenic and Old Lace or John Cleese-ish comedy that's "rather naughty than dirty" as inspiration.

Stargate fans will see some familiar faces and enjoy the clever humor and timing we've come to love from these actors. Even if you're not familiar with the actors from "A Dogs Breakfast" you will definitely benefit from the chemistry that the group creates.

David Hewlett and Kate Hewlett, real life siblings, quickly present a dysfunctional relationship that really makes the story work. Patrick(David Hewlett) is a psycho shut-in who's only friends are his make-up artist sister and scruffy dog Mars. Marilyn, Patrick's sister comes home with a surprise, her new fiancée played by Paul McGillion.

McGillion does a great job as the fiancée and the polar opposite of David Hewlett's character. He obviously has fun with the role, and his light hearted and well-executed performance offsets the borderline psychotic Patrick(David Hewlett) and adds to the classic comedy feel of the film.

And how can you not love Mars, the dog who becomes silent witness and unwitting accomplice to his master's neurosis?

The camera work is surprisingly well done, the music builds creepy suspense in all the right places and the set, well, it's exactly what you think a house should look like considering a shut-in is the primary resident.

I gave it 80 out of 100, trying not to be bias since I'm a huge Hewlett fan and Stargate fan in general. Definitely worth the watch on those weekends when you have a movie marathon on the schedule. Hope to see more work from this group again soon!
