Review of A Day at the Races (1937) by Eric M — 29 Oct 2007
A very good Marx Brothers film that could've been a classic had they dropped the dull romantic subplot and canned the elaborate ballet sequence which stops the film's momentum dead in its tracks.
A rather embarassing blackface scene also badly dates the picture as well. Still, this movie is at its best when it focuses on the brothers' always amusing antics, including a hilarious "examination" on Margaret Dumont and a classic exchange in which Groucho and Chico haggle over "tootsie-fruitsy ice cream" which rank among the funniest they've ever done.
