The cast is top-notch. Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen are meticulous in their performances down to the wire-framing of their characters, while Vincent Cassel is effectively elusive. And the way Keira Knightley handles both hysteria and extreme fetish is nakedly grotesque almost to the point of being absurdly humorous, which is what makes her performance such a kick.
Yet even when perfectly still she conveys inner emotional wreckage that's rather haunting.
