Follows Cronenberg's current trend (with everything from the last five years or more) of indulging a bit too much in his shortcomings... he makes movies that undoubtedly interest and intrigue him, but doesn't really care what the audience expects, wants or thinks.
He'd do well to remember that the story itself is most important, not his vices.
