Review of A Cock and Bull Story (2005) by Alwyn D — 29 Aug 2008
A film-within-a-film caper that charts the vagaries of filming Sterne's satirical novel, which was "post modern before there was any 'modern' to be 'post' about", in Coogan's words.
I (like everyone else I imagine) was expecting something along the lines of Coogan's now-legendary work with Armando Ianucci, and so was initially perplexed, disoriented and a little disappointed.
A second viewing much later on, however, allowed me to enjoy it in its own right, and it really comes off rather well. It's smart-arse meta-film permutations are good fun, and Brydon and Coogan's one-upmanship serves as a spring board for some "classic intercourse" (to quote Partridge.
..well...Coogan again..maybe I should stop doing that...hey, this has turned into a meta-review, subsuming itself under the categories of critique! How apposite!(wankercunt)).
