Review of A Christmas Carol (1984) by Bill C — 25 Dec 2007
This movie, like most other adaptations of the novel, fails to fully capture the world depicted by Dickens. George C. Scott certainly embodies the character of Scrooge, but the film does very little to develop how he became such a character.
Perhaps it would have been better to stick to the novel in this regard. One of the better changes, however, was casting a female to play the Ghost of Christmas Past, whom Dickens depicts as an effeminate male.
For the most part the acting was good, but Anthony Walters just does not portray the Tiny Tim that is capable of capturing one's sympathy. He has a limp- he needs to be a good actor to make the average viewer to see this limp as not only a stigma but a life threatening condition, which of course Walters isn't good enough to do.
