Review of A Chorus Line (1985) by Abel D — 20 Mar 2013
An ultimately turgid affair, Attenborough's adaptation of the Broadway classic is literal to a fault: it's watching stage auditions, and THAT'S IT. Instead of opening up the backgrounds and stories of the dancers, using the medium of film to allow for visual storytelling like Chicago would decades later, Attenborough keeps things closed off and simple, making for a dry and ultimately boring film, with only a small handful of songs over the near 2 hour runtime and Michael Douglas in a thankless, marquee-value-only role that could've been played by anyone else.
