Review of A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) by Tom P — 28 Apr 2008
I think sometimes people forget how much of a sadsack piece of shit Charlie Brown was. The Christmas special is the sugarcoated version of Peanuts, and Chuck still spends half of it talking about how depressed he is.
It's weirdly paced, crudely animated, and low key compared to every other Peanuts cartoon special. It's not quite like anything else I've ever seen. When Linus recites that Bible passage at the end and it's met with awkward silence and a shrug (and not thunderous applause like anything else would have done), I want to cry.
Beautiful stuff.
