Review of A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) by Aubrey P — 23 Nov 2012
It's hard to explain why this special works so well; it just sort of does. Maybe it has to do with that fact that there was hardly any budget to it. The story is pretty basic, the acting is wooden, and animation is simple.
But I think that's why it's so good and a classic: there's no bullcrap in it whatsoever. It's straight-forward and to the point, and even though there was barely any money put into it, they still tried their best to give us a good Christmas special, and the effort does show.
It has great music, a wonderful theme, and there is something about the bluntness of the characters that's actually very warm and tenderhearted. And let's not forget the famous monologue spoken by Linus on what Chrstmas is really about.
It's not spectacular, but you feel the effort, the commitment, and most of all: the sincerity.
