Review of A Bronx Tale (1993) by Anatoly S — 03 Mar 2010
De Niro's debut directing efforts are a treat to watch, as he adapts Palminteri's screenplay from his one-man stage play. The performances are great, especially Lillo Brancato as the 17yo Calogero, or 'C', who also narrates the film. While De Niro himself isn't featured a whole lot, the scenes he does feature in are always full of heart & morality as he tries in vain to dissuade his son from getting involved with the neighbourhood wiseguy (Palminteri). The theme of wasted talent comes up throughout he movie, leaving C to question everything from his parents, to his friends, and mixed-race relationships. The music was great, featuring a range of 1960s doo-wop/soul, creating a very believable setting in the rough Bronx. Nice little cameo from Joe Pesci too, which is always appreciated.
Last words? Motivating, passionate, entertaining.
