Review of A Bridge Too Far (1977) by Curtis S — 01 Dec 2009
*BIASED FILM REVIEW ALERT*.
Yes, my review of this war movie will be heavily biased because I LOVE war films. Especially WWII films. With that said here we go. This film could have been a lot better, but I still loved it. The biggest thing it suffers from is covering far far too much material. The film is all over the frickin place and a ton of it could have been cut out for having nothing to do with the main plot at all.
Example: All of James Caan's scenes should have not been in the film. While Caan delivers them beautifully, they are really very random and have nothing to do with the primary plotline. Also, one of the scenes was so fucking stupid I wanted to stop watching (an absurd escape scene where he sits in a jeep in the woods surrounded by Nazi's staring at him then simply speeds through them).
The story was great though, it's a very solid testament to how awful war is, as well as how much damage an arrogant ignorant General can do to his own forces. The story is about failure, and focuses heavily on things like honor.
The movie is very well shot, and clearly had an enormous budget for principle photography. The battle scenes are incredible, the set pieces and environments are insanely well done. The acting is also very very solid here but there are so many main characters that none of them get a chance to deliver.
Basically this is a good war movie that fell a bit short.
Who should see this?
1) War film fans.
2) Fans of British Accents.
3) People who like epic explody thingy movies.
4) Fans of the down ending.
