Review of A Bridge Too Far (1977) by Robert R — 31 Oct 2017
Not sure if some of these critics walked into the right movie theater back in the day, because "A Bridge Too Far" is neither "boring," "tired," nor "predictable." Indeed, Richard Attenborough's 1977 account of Operation Market Garden is nothing short of epic, featuring jaw-dropping production values, a marvelous cast, and some sobering thematic statements on war and the Sisyphus-esque persistence that can unfold on the battlefield.
Its patchwork-quilt-style story structure - courtesy of legendary screenwriter William Goldman - also really helps the audience feel engrained in the event therein, providing an intense, all-encompassing, and occasionally exhausting (in the best way) experience.
Truly an underrated gem of a film that all history buffs and war film enthusiasts should see.
