Review of A Better Tomorrow II (1987) by Brook L — 28 May 2007
So what do you do when Chow Yun Fat's character dies in the first ABT, but he was so freaking charismatic that you just have to have him in the sequel as well? You get Chow to play the dead guy's twin brother of course.
Ti Lung plays a much lesser role in here, where the screentime is shared more evenly by Leslie, Chow Yun Fat, and Dean Shek. ABT2 is 5 times more melodramatic than the first one. The awful melodrama almost ruins this movie, but it is saved by the performance of Chow Yun Fat, who is at the peak of his game.
It is hard to think of a character cooler than him. One of the coolest scenes feature Chow Yun Fat taking out every baddy with his huge bitch of a shotgun. The final battle is probably the most insane and bloody shootout I've ever seen.
