Review of A Better Life (2011) by Cory W — 31 Jan 2012
Many will see this film as indulgent rubbish trying to advocate for illegal immigrants in US, particularly Mexicans. Which it is to some extent. So those who do not sympathize or find the subject sensitive in any form will most likely feel the same about this film.
What cannot be denied is the powerbomb performance of Demian Bichir and Jose Julian. The story can be called cliche if you want and it probably is very light compared to what it is out there in reality.
We only get to see the values, ideals an love that come out of these very common situations. The only bad presented to us, is the most appalling of them all, separation from love. No matter on what coordinates you are in the wide ideological spectrum, if you have ever felt separation from a loved one you must be able to understand the main premise of this film.
If you have not, leave it in the hands of Demian Bichir.
