Review of A Better Life (2011) by Gerardo R — 25 Jul 2012
A very good movie that covers a crucial week in the life of an illegal immigrant father and his son. The subject matter faces two big hurdles with the audience: 1) a realistic portrayal of the life of illegal immigrants is difficult to watch, 2) there are people with personal political positions that refuse to look at illegal immigration as an issue of human dignity.
The movie is a bit slower at the beginning, but it develops the characters very well. The actors did a good job portraying a well rounded character that can be recognized as a real person. The down to earth tone of the movie makes you see the plot as a thoroughly realistic scenario.
On another level, a big difficulty comes with the ending. The realism of the movie is not quite carried through to the end. The movie is a satisfactory and surprising portrayal of the bond between the father and his son as they try to find their own way through life.
