Review of 99 Homes (2015) by Deepak M — 01 Jul 2016
When the opening titles showed that this movie was produced by Ashok Amritraj, I was a bit apprehensive (remember 'Jeans'?), but all of that quickly evaporated when the plot began to unfold. When the housing bubble burst in 2007-08, and home foreclosures skyrocketed, a lot of real estate companies and banks made vast sums of money by exploiting loopholes in government programs like Fannie Mae, and also, through outright fraud.
This is a gripping and eye-opening fictional depiction of their devious machinations. My only criticism is that, at times, the plot had too much emotional content, where a more sedate approach would have been suitable.
Except for Laura Dern, the actors were unknown to me, but they all have acted wonderfully. Great weekend watch.
