Review of 99 Homes (2015) by Greg B — 12 Oct 2015
"99 Homes" is a real estate drama rooted in the ideal of the American dream. Andrew Garfield plays a homeowner who lives with his mother and son who is evicted by Carver Realty. Michael Shannon plays Carver.
In an ironic twist of events, Garfield ends up working for Shannon as a broker who goes with the sheriff to peoples' homes to evict them who have been foreclosed upon. In no certain terms, Garfield sells his soul to the devil for a buck.
There's no more succinct way to sum up his job. He turns from the hard-working everyman into a morally bankrupt scumbag rolling in blood money. I thought Garfield actually did decent acting. He has been typecasted as the new Spiderman and this role shows his versatility as an actor.
This is a very dark film, but it is also chillingly accurate in how it portrays the ruthless, conniving world that is real estate. A passably enjoyable film ----------------------------------------------------------------------- B.
