Review of 976-EVIL (1988) by Terri H — 06 Dec 2008
This is one of those movies from the 80's that is not great, but man its a lot of fun. I remember getting together with friends to do horror marathons and this one, more often than not showed up. Its got a weird feel about it, kind of a surreal, claustrophobic atmosphere, its hard to put your finger on what is not quite right.
Stephen Geofferys really stands out here, much like he did in Fright Night, its a shame he felt he had to move into porn, he was actually pretty good in this type of role.
The make up effects are really good, the cracked skin effect on the possessed Hoax is very effective. Some of the other effects are not so great, the miniatures are a bit dodgy.
Overall, a fun demon possession film with a bit of a twist (the whole devil using the phone to get souls). Worth watching for one of the greatest line ever... "If you value your life, I suggest you leave me alone." Classic.
