Review of 9 Songs (2004) by Paul G — 21 Feb 2008
It's very hard to review this movie if you don't know anything about it so I'll just let you know the basics - It's a british film about a brit guy and american woman who are in love in england. The films centres around 9 songs performed by real bands on real live performances at brixton academy. It was one of the first films to be released in cinemas across the country in the uk showing explicit sex scenes too. So it's a little different to watch than the normal boy meets girl story.
Some might think this is a good thing, some might think its a bad thing and some might think it would just be a porno with a bit of a story. It's more of a simple story where not much happens with the odd bit of explicit sex. It was enjoyable and the sex scenes didn't really make that much of an impact but it seemed like they were trying to make a huge deal about them being different to the norm so it was a little too focused on them than need be (but perhaps the message was that the shallow relationship (like the shallow film) was centred around the sex)!
It wasn't a bad film but wasn't exactly a great film. The pattern it followed seemed to be Music, Sex, Music, Talking, Sex, Music, Sex, Music, etc, etc. I wouldn't bother watchin it again either. I didn't particularly like the music (but it wasn't my taste so fair enough! - super fury animals, franz ferdinand, black rebel motorcycle group, etc) and didn't feel too much for the characters, I even grew to hate the female lead. In my opinion it could have been better with a little more in the production values, less in the sex values and some more (and better) dialogue so we could actually feel a bit more for the couple. Worth a look to get the curiosity out of the way but dont watch it with your mum!!!
