Review of 8MM (1999) by Ben S — 08 Nov 2008
This is one of those dark and disturbing films that you won't forget too quickly, which is definitely one of its strengths. You're pulled right into the mystery along with the protagonist, and just like him, you find yourself wanting to discover the truth no matter how far down it takes you.
Joaquin Phoenix is extremely likable and delivers some of the best lines of the movie, even though his supporting character ends up going nowhere. In fact, it's a shame that, despite being daring enough to delve into such twisted and violent corners of humanity, this movie still suffers from a lot of the same flaws as other more generic thrillers.
The plot gets weaker as the movie progresses, and the characters are underdeveloped, neither of which help this movie to be taken seriously. Not bad, but there are better films out there with the same message and similar ideas.
