Review of 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1995) by Jason K — 08 May 2008
Admittedly a difficult watch from time to time due to events displayed in real time static shots like a symbolically interesting but undoubtedly deliberately over-long shot of a man playing table tennis with a machine that shows no sign of ever stopping.
Regardless, it is still packed with Haneke moments (like the trademark lighting and framing style and especially towards the absurdly violent end and subsequent newscast that drives his themes home). Most people seem to agree this is one of his most difficult watches, and it is, but if you love Haneke, and I do, then you should seek it out.
