4 out of 5 stars. An impressive debut by British filmmaker, Yann Demange, who has already been hired to direct the next Brad Pitt film. "'71" is set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during the political turmoil of British occupancy and is about a young British soldier accidentally left behind by his unit after a Catholic neighborhood riot breaks out. He is hunted down by IRA members, citizens who get involved and undercover British military officers who have complex motives of their own.

The film never panders to the audience, who must keep guessing who is on what side, while the all night pursuit results in violence, bombings & increasing mayhem. Jack O'Connell is on the verge of international stardom with "Starred Up," "Unbroken" and now this film in just a year. He's excellent as the hero trying to save his life during an increasingly faster and frightening all night chase. Filmed in Northern England due to sensitivities still lingering in Ireland, this is a breathtaking and exciting film worth seeking out.

Be warned that the extreme violence may too much for some audiences, but for most, this complex thriller, set against a real political backdrop, will be worth the intense experience. Winner of several international awards including Best Feature Film and 4 out of 8 Independent British film nominations this year. Check it out in this season of much less interesting films.
