Review of '71 (2014) by Amilcar A — 15 Mar 2015
First a disclaimer. All movies made in Britain no involving Hugh Grant or Colin Firth need subtitles. There are entire sections of this movie where I would have understood better if it was in Mandarin.
Other than the incomprehensible accents, the movie is excellent. Based on a single night of terror from a single army private that gets caught in a mess in Belfast, this film reminds us of things that we have forgotten about.
The independence movements in Ireland, the IRA, the British army and the people involved were one confused bunch. Loyalties were consistently tested, no one could distinguish friend from foe and it was unclear who wanted what.
The violence was ruthless and no one was safe, including women, children and the elderly.
Movies like this one serve a double purpose. They are both great films and educate people. Too bad no one watches them.
