Review of '71 (2014) by Ray S — 15 Jul 2015
I didn't know a whole lot about the Irish English troubles going in, but my friend really liked it so I checked it out, it was definitely way better than I thought it would be, it's not as much a war movie as it is a thriller, about an English soldier who gets stranded behind "enemy lines" which is just the city of Belfast Northern Ireland, and his struggle to get back to his platoon, while also examining how brutal and cruel the year 1971 was between the new nations, a lot of anger runs through the film, hard to say that there was a "good" and a "bad" side, both sides committed violent acts, and both had their own worthy grievances, not an easy watch but still very well made and acted by a cast of solid british character actors that ive seen in many other things.
