Review of '71 (2014) by Bassem E — 08 Sep 2015
As much as I wanted to enjoy this movie, and it had a few of eyebrow raising parts, I just couldn't find it to actually give a care about the characters, whether they lived or died or the cause for which they were fighting.
The movie feels uninspired. I will give credit for the beautiful yet dark shots. I will also give applause for Jack O'Connell's portrayal. I like the fact that instead of flooding his character with heavy dialogue the director chose to exuberate emotion from his face.
I also feel the costars played their roles solidly, especially Corey McKinley who is a foul-mouthed loyalist child who comes to the protagonist aid. Still, the film never quite seems to generate enough momentum and comes off feeling like an excuse to put O'Connell back in a military uniform after the success of Unbroken.
Yes, Unbroken was released after this film so I guess you could look at it as if the main character is improving on his choice or war films.
