Inspired by writer Will Reiser's own experience with cancer, 50/50 is a poignant reminder that a good movie can make you laugh and cry.

Public-radio journalist Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is stunned to learn that at 27, he has been diagnosed with a malignant tumour. He begins chemotherapy, but discovers his chances of survival are only 50/50.

Adam's best friend, Kyle (Seth Rogen), tries to keep his spirits up by using his illness to pick up women, while his artist girlfriend, Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard), insists she won't bail on him, despite obvious discomfort with the situation.

Adam is held together somewhat haphazardly by his overbearing mother, Diane (Anjelica Huston), and inexperienced - though well-meaning - therapist, Katherine (Anna Kendrick).

Reiser's script stays fresh and raw, and avoids applying Hollywood gloss to the events, thanks partly to the semi-autobiographical nature of the story.

Director Jonathan Levine has a soft touch, allowing his stellar cast to truly shine.

The film walks the line between comedy and drama almost seamlessly to portray something that is honest, moving and, at times, hilarious.
