Review of 50/50 (2011) by Thesodomizer — 02 Aug 2018
50/50 does a good job balancing drama and comedy, considering it is a comedy about cancer. That being said it does struggle to create enough empathy for the characters, however it isn't big enough of an issue to make the movie dislikable.
Will Reiser's praise worthy screenplay works quite well with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's stellar performance. The rest of the cast also delivers. What really appealed to me is the dark sense of humor, however if you're easily offended you will not agree with me.
50/50 is lighthearted enough to be funny and serious enough to be a realistic drama. Still the best part about 50/50 is that the film makers know what their doing, this is as realistic as cancer movies get and I deeply appreciate that.
Another small issue I found with 50/50 is that Seth Rogen's character is basically a copy from his charter in The 40 Year-Old Virgin. It's not a bad performance but it's just something I've seen before.
