Review of 50/50 (2011) by Lewis E — 23 Jan 2014
Started off a bit stale but it was pretty good when it got going. Gordon-Levitt captures the mixed emotions inherent in such a depressing dilemma, successfully invoking empathy from the audience. No surprise that Seth Rogen plays usual Seth Rogen but he works as the funny best friend who offers a contrast to Gordon-Levitt's more serious personality.
The scenes with the two old fellow cancer patients are well done, giving a light-hearted perspective on the situation, but unfortunately they don't use them enough. Best thing is how it integrates the comedy and drama elements, efficiently balancing the two.
However, it does not reach new heights in either department to warrant anything higher than the score given.
