Review of 49 Up (2006) by Kevin S — 02 Dec 2006
I've seen all of Michael Apted's "Up" documentaries, and each new installment is a treat. The first film, "7 Up," had Apted and his crew interviewing a wide cross-section of British children from different social and economic backgrounds.
Every seven years since, the filmmakers have revisited the group to find out how their lives are developing. It's an amazing process of documentation and discovery, as we see how their personalities, clearly visible even as children, shaped the eventual outcomes of their lives.
In this latest installment there are a number of surprising developments, and as you might expect, the hair is grayer, the tummies are rounder, and the faces more wrinkled than ever before... but by now these people have become so familiar to us that it truly feels like we're catching up with old friends.
Start with the first film, and work your way through these fascinating lives. See you in seven years for "56 Up.".
