Review of 49 Up (2006) by Edward S — 06 Jul 2011
After watching so many of these you feel like you really know these people and look forward to catching up. They all seem to be a lot more introspective than in the last edition.
I'm not sure why, but I was really happy to see that things worked out so well for tony. I was really happy to see that his wife and he overcame their issues. Interestingly enough he predicts the coming financial meltdown!
I thought the Jackie segment was very interesting. It deals a lot more heavily with the people questioning the editing and their own representations and I thought that was a fascinating, new element.
I think its really important to recognize that all of these people have accepted the challenges in their lives and they all maintain happy, optimistic outlooks. Maybe the lesson of this series is to take what life gives you and make the best of it.
Its also interesting how many of the subjects dislike participating in the project. This is such a 180 from our current culture where everyone seems to want to be on tv all the time and open all of their life to the world.
I mourn for Symon's awesome mustache and I'm still waiting to hear from Grevel about the accusation that he's always getting minuses.
