This film helped make Eddie Murphy a star. Perhaps director Walter Hill then is partly responsible for crap like THE GOLDEN CHILD (1986) or Murphy's recent forays into Walt Disney films. It is not a comedy; the film starts with a violent prison breakout.
But Murphy delivers some very funny lines and lightens up what is basically a grim plot in which a hard-boiled cop (the superb Nolte) chases a psychotic cop killed with the aid of temporarily released convict Murphy.
