Not every movie is shooting for an academy award. The story is from traditional Japanese mythology and is being told in a way that might broaden it's appeal to westerners who often fail to grasp the cultural traditions of the Far East.
Good special effects. I think this got a bum rap from Keanu haters that are basically jealous that they will never make the kind of money he already has.
