Review of 47 Ronin (1994) by Aaron M — 20 Jun 2018
The legend of the 47 Ronin is timeless and it's been adapted in so many ways and forms throughout the years. The most recent, 2013's 47 Ronin, is a major letdown in every sense of the word. The film follows 47 samurai who seek revenge for the murder of their master.
The film definitely stays true to the tale, almost to a fault, which will definitely turn away most people by the end of the film. That being said, even though there's a lot of respect for the source material, the film is painfully dull and boring.
The visual effects are decent, but they're too abundant. The action is staged well, but there isn't enough. But worst of all, it's so serious, and the few times jokes are attempted, they fall flat.
On the acting side, it's a shame to see everyone wasted, and that's not an exaggeration. Poor Keanu Reeves has the skills to fight and act, but he's given so, so little, and the same goes for the international cast.
The film hit major delays and budget issues and honestly, after seeing it, I wish it was scrapped, because what little joy and excitement their is to be had is almost immediately outshined by the dull, grim, and serious take.
