Review of 47 Meters Down (2017) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
It doesn't change the beats of a shark film it follows the same sort of idea as Open Water where for the duration of the film we have two isolated characters in one location. Due to this the tension is great and the atmosphere is very strong.
The film is dark in picture and in nature, a couple of really dark and jump scare scenes are in the film, one in particular towards the climax. The films paced well but does become rather slow in its second and third act.
It has a good ending that alps surprised me, this film as much as it plays by the book, also stands quite well on its own merits. The performances are mixed, the two main characters are good and bad. Mandy Moore just doesn't deliver her lines well and her character is really annoying throughout.
Claire Holt is the stand out here, she's not really well written but puts a good shift in as the female heroine character. The characters are just really underdeveloped and I can take that if the writers didn't try and force some engaging emotional dialogue in the film, which just doesn't work.
As much as I like Matthew Modine I think he shouldn't have been cast to keep the nature of film as real as possible, when he turns up I just automatically saw Matthew Modine which shouldn't be the case.
