Review of 47 Meters Down (2017) by David W — 04 Jul 2017
Just saw 47 Meters Down tonight and I have to say, it should've stayed direct-to-video. The first problem is that they only give 1 character backstory and her backstory doesn't even fit into the plot.
They should've focused more on the relationship between the sisters that way we'd be more emotionally attached and hope for them to have a happy ending. Next, they have these very important to the plot characters speak a different language and not give subtitles.
If their plan was to not give subtitles because it might take away from they sketchiness of the characters, then they failed because not being able to understand half of those characters dialogue makes you just tune it out.
Another glaring flaw was their lack of use in the sharks. The shark(s) really only had 1 effect the entire movie and that's because the film either failed to use them or used them horribly. You have moments where you're thinking "Man the shark could've really helped this scene" and moments where you go "What was even the point of the shark being in this scene.
" It's just hard to believe that a great white shark would be too slow to catch up and eat its prey. The film also suffers from some uninteresting dialogue like "Look at all the fish!" It also has a really weird time frame that's constantly in question.
Mandy Moore and Claire Holt did manage to do their best with what they were given and stood out in some scenes. The ending was also very well done aside from Mandy Moore's strange attempt at a crazy laugh.
All in all, I would only watch the movie again for the ending and can't find any reason to recommend it.
