Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by Steve R — 17 Jan 2010
Okay being a big fan of Sexy Beast I was looking forward to seeing this film despite some bad reviews. Unfortunately, it is a showcase on how not to make a film. It fails to re-create the humour of Sexy Beast despite the fact it sounds like the dialogue may have come from that film.
It is badly paced, over indulgent and the repetition of swear words wears thin after a while. There are some great moments; Steven Berkoff's short appearance with Ian McShane is funny despite over acting, and McShane himself is great.
Finally, Ray Winstone said on the Jonathan Ross Show that this was kind of a woman's film. Iin no way is this a womans film it couldn't be any less of a womans film if it tried, with scenes of domestic violence towards his wife and constant us of the c word, what was he thinking when he said that? A wasted opportunity all round.
