Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by Jim F — 13 Jul 2012
I don't understand the reviews. Clearly, the film is about the protagonist's different mindsets, or in schizophrenic terms, his different personalities. All of his personalities - the other hooligans - take control of his mind (the dialog/action) at various times, but during pivotal times, the primary personality (Winstone) dismisses them and regains control.
This seems to be so obvious in the plot. Winstone beats up his wife and then the other personalities are forced to take control. The other personalities kidnap the adulterer and discuss how to kill him.
Every so often, Winstone wakes up and mumbles less aggressive dialog/is more "reasonable," and then when he freezes in his thoughts again, the other personalities take over. When Winstone finally gains consciousness, he dismisses the other personalities.
When the Winstone character is finally in complete control he remembers what he did to his wife, and basically tells the other personalities not to intervene in adultery issue anymore. Why is nobody getting this? It is a similar plot to Identity, but more dramatic and less obvious.
