Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by Warwick B — 17 Jan 2010
The movie is a story about Colin Diamond (Ray Winstone) a London tough guy whose missus (Joanne Whalley) walks out on him. Diamond, with the help of four foul mouthed old villains (John Hurt, Ian McShane, Tom Wilkinson and Stephen Dillane), kidnaps his wife's young lover for Diamond to exact revenge for her infidelity.
The film, except for a few flashbacks, is mainly set on one night of the abduction in a run down East End safe house. With the kangaroo court in session, Diamond griped with grief, remorse and self pity, has to decide what to do with his prisoner.
This British gangster-esque flick is an anti-climax. The drama is mostly confined to one room in which much is said but little is done. Although little actually happens and the dialogue full of swearing, there are some brilliant exchanges as Diamond's geezers bounce lines off each other. Fine performances from John Hurt who plays Old Man Peanut, the articulator of the crew's moral code and thirsty for gangland justice and Ian McShane who plays dandy Meredith.
