Review of 44 Inch Chest (2009) by Daniel K — 04 Jan 2011
2: Strange picture. It is so thin and minimal one wonders how it managed to keep you somehwat attentive throughout. This is likely due to the stellar cast and the confusion has to exactly where it is heading or what precisely is going on.
It ends up simply being a story about a man that is brought to his knees by a woman. It's a very drab and simple picture, but because certain plot elements are not made clear either at the outset, over the course of the film, or in some cases at all, the picture takes projects a much more complex atmosphere.
The cast is about as good as it gets in films like this: Winstone, McShane, Wilkinson, Dillane, and Hurt. I challenge anyone to find many recent releases with five actors this skilled and accomplished.
I ultimately felt the picture didn't really work, but it was a rather interesting oddity.
