Review of 42nd Street (1933) by Nate W — 28 Aug 2012
In many ways the archetypal showbiz film, "42nd Street" would inform the 'let's-put-on-a-show' style of Hollywood musical that would be seen in later endeavors such as "Gold-diggers of 1933", "Babes in Arms", "Strike Up the Band", etc.
The main attractions, as always, are Busby Berkeley's brilliantly conceived dance numbers. The lavish finale to this effort is stamped by such showstoppers as the titular "42nd Street". Naturally, there's plenty of filler padding out the run time, but unlike less successful movies of the genre, it's still reasonably entertaining and well put together.
