Review of 4192: The Crowning of the Hit King (2010) by Adam C — 25 Mar 2012
Great documentary on the Hit King himself. Narrated by J.K. Simmons (Spider-Man movies, Law & Order) the film chronicles Rose's beginnings as a young boy developing his talents to signing his first major league contract with the Reds hours before his first appearance, to his numerous awards and World Series titles, all leading up to his major accomplishment.
Breaking Ty Cobb's all time hit record. This documentary clocks in at almost 2 hours, but it never skips a beat. Features commentary by Marty Brennaman, Tony Perez, Mike Schmidt and of course Charlie Hustle himself.
I learned quite a few things about Rose that I've never heard anyone mention before, especially when Rose states that all of his accomplishments happened on certain dates as other historical events.
The film ends with the entire television footage of Rose's magical hit and for one night was on top of the world. The documentary is nothing but a positive tribute to a man who played the game of Baseball with heart and integrity.
Nowhere in the documentary they talk about his gambling scandal. I really appreciated them not talking about it. This is a great documentary for not only Reds fans, but all fans of Baseball. There will never be another player like Pete Rose.
He truly was one of a kind.
