Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Thomas W — 02 May 2009
There is a scene in this film that lasts probably more than five minutes, at a dinner table. It is told in a single shot, from the perspective of a seat at the table. It's five minutes or more, and I soon stopped reading the subtitles.
The conversation is unimportant. What is important is the young woman we're looking at, and what plays across her face. It is one of the most beautifully directed and beautifully acted scenes I have ever watched.
It is representative of the entire film. Many of the shots are minutes-long, and we simply observe the characters, yet we do not feel like outsiders watching them; we are a part of what is happening, and by the end, we are completely invested in it.
This is one of the most difficult films I have ever watched, uncomfortable, and at times, almost making me despair. It's riveting from the beginning without forcing tension, and without forced drama.
This is a film that will stay with me a long time.
