Review of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007) by Andrew A — 23 Mar 2011
This is a film, by and large, about emotions - and the long, drawn out takes and shots are very much designed purposely to accentuate that. It's a process that makes this film difficult to watch in places (the dinner table sequence, for example, almost leads you to believe that you're sitting there too, having to endure it).
There's a sense of stasis, and staleness, that I can only begin to imagine must approximate what life felt like under the Ceausescu regime, and which is reminiscent of the 1970s films of Chantal Akerman, and of some of Nagisa Oshima's early work.
It's a workout for the mind, but a worthy one.
