Review of 35 Shots of Rum (2009) by Liam P — 07 Aug 2009
Claire Denis' latest examination of the relationship between a father and daughter is a slow linear observation of the daily goings on in an apartment complex. Focusing on the central relationship it brings forth the daily encounters both Lionel anJosephine have with each other and others in the building as well as at work and university.
The performances are unifomrly very strong yet the film doesn't completely connect as Denis leaves an illusive quality completely enveloping the events on screen. Trusting the audience is one thing but failing to explain things at all lends a vague quality to the film that tends to lessen the power of the subtle things going on, particularly in the film's early stages.
Towards the end the power of the piece starts to take hold but by that time many will have disembarked.
