Review of 3:10 to Yuma (1957) by Mike S — 28 Nov 2013
A gorgeously filmed Western about morality and doing the right thing. Strong performances all around from the cast. I liked that this film disturbed me by making the villain for more likeable than the hero, even though the villain was clearly an immoral, selfish man.
I was struck by the director's comment in a making-of featurette on the DVD that Westerns are like science fiction or fantasy films: they allow the filmmaker to present new takes on the human condition in a setting that is far enough removed from the viewer's experience to allow for fresh perspectives on current issues.
Historical accuracy is not the point; the point is telling a story that makes you think about what you might do in such a situation. Although there is a lot of talking and philosophizing, there are also several great action scenes and running gun battles.
And it makes you wonder why evil often seems so much more charming than goodness.
