Review of 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) by Dann M — 01 Aug 2014
Exciting and action-packed, 300: Rise of an Empire is a scrolling epic that completes the story of Leonidas and the 300. Neither a prequel nor a sequel, the story follows the Athenian general Themistokles as he leads a naval force to defend Greece from King Xerxes' invasion fleet while the Spartans are engaged with the Persian army at the Hot Gates.
The action scenes are especially good and full of energy; partly due to the dynamic directing style. And, Eva Green gives an extraordinary performance; making for an incredibly charismatic villain. Additionally, the visual aesthetic, while staying true to the first film, does an impressive job at broadening the world and balancing the gritty violence with the stylistic costume and set designs.
Building on the original, 300: Rise of an Empire is a compelling thriller that's full of adventure.
